From the Sidelines with Spyro - Round 2 Review

ree

The Woodville Rugby Union Club played host to Round 2 , delivering a day packed with excitement and high-stakes action.

Fans were treated to thrilling matchups, dramatic last-minute victories, and a commanding performance from reigning champions. Just as they did in the season opener, both the UniSA Eagles and Adelaide University Hogs secured wins in the Juniors and Seniors divisions, each improving to a perfect 2-0 record.

Juniors: UniSA Eagles 2-0 defeat Port Adelaide Spartans 0- 2

Final Score: 21-8

The Eagles took down the Spartans 21-8 in a strong showing that moves them to 2-0 on the season. After losing last year’s championship despite an undefeated run, they’re playing with a chip on their shoulder—and it shows. Confident and focused, the Eagles look like the team to beat this year. Meanwhile, the Spartans drop to 0-2 and are still struggling to find their rhythm, only putting points on the board for the first time this week. If the Eagles keep this momentum, they might just run the table and finish what they couldn’t last season.

Seniors: UniSA Eagles 2-0 defeat Port Adelaide Spartans 0- 2

Final Score: 22-14

The Eagles remain undefeated, but they were made to earn it as they held off a Spartans team who were looking to avenge the disappointing result from last week.

There was some serious tension in this one as both teams knew just how important a win would be for their season. From the opening kick off the action was hard hitting, with the occasional spot fire breaking out. At half time it was all tied up 8-8, with both team defences being the standout early. The Eagles had the ball to begin the second half, but it was the Spartans who scored first after they intercepted the Eagles QB and returned it for a big gain, setting them up 1st & Goal.

The feeling around the ground was last years runner up was about to make a statement. But this Eagles team just kept coming, scoring midway through the fourth to square the contest up 14-14.

This was the Spartans moment, to drive down the field late in the game and get their season to 1-1. Unfortunately, they were unable to do so, giving the ball back to the Eagles in the dying seconds of the game.

What took place next was something straight out of a Madden video game. It’s 1st & 10 at midfield, and all it took  was one play, one pass, and it was touchdown Eagles. After a successful 2-point conversion, they emerged victorious 22-14. They move to 2-0, and the Spartans fall to 0-2 but despite not coming away with a win they lose no admirers after a heartbreaking loss.

Juniors: Adelaide University Hogs 2-0 defeat South City Chiefs 0- 2

Final Score: 24-22

In what turned out to be an instant classic, the Adelaide University Hogs edged out the South City Chiefs 24-22 in a thrilling contest that went right down to the wire.

After last week’s heavy loss, the Chiefs came into the game desperate to bounce back and regain some of the confidence that helped them win their 5th straight championship last season. They started strong, scoring on their opening drive and converting for two to take an early 8-0 lead. But the Hogs, who came in at 1-0, responded immediately, and by halftime they had taken control with a 16-8 lead.

In the second half The Chiefs showed why they have won 5 consecutive titles, scoring on back-to-back drives to surge ahead 22-16. It looked like they were on their way to putting a 1 in the win column. But the Hogs had other plans. In the dying minutes, they marched down the field and punched it in for the go-ahead touchdown, adding a 2-point conversion to snatch a 24-22 lead.

With less than a minute remaining, the Chiefs made one last desperate push to score driving all the way down to the red zone — but the Hogs’ defence came up huge, slamming the door shut and sealing a statement win. The Hogs improve to 2-0, while the Chiefs start their title defence 0-2.

Seniors: Adelaide University Hogs 2-0 defeat South City Chiefs 0- 2

Final Score: 52-0

In a dominant display, the Adelaide University Hogs crushed the South City Chiefs 52-0, to remain undefeated. The Chiefs are struggling at 0-2 after last week's 58-0 loss. It’s been a tough start for them as they have now conceded 50+ points in both games, and are yet to put their own points on the board.

The Hogs have started the season just as they finished last season, strong and dominant. They have taken full advantage of their momentum as defending champions and seem poised to defend their title and remain a league powerhouse again this season.
