TACKLE FOOTBALL IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA
American Football South Australia (AFSA) currently runs two tackle football divisions:
Under 18s (Mixed): A development-focused competition open to all genders, designed to help young athletes learn the game, build skills, and gain match experience.
Senior Men’s: A competitive adult division for male athletes, offering a higher level of play and structured competition.
Together, these divisions form the pathway for athletes to progress into higher honours, including state, national, and international representation, with opportunities to compete at elite levels.
REPRESENTING YOUR STATE OR NATION
Tackle football provides clear pathways for athletes to progress from local competition into representative honours at both state and national level.
Players who perform strongly at club level may be selected to represent South Australia at national championships, competing against the best talent in the country.
From there, exceptional athletes can progress to international representation opportunities, including events such as the IFAF World Championships.
US COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
For elite athletes, one of the most exciting pathways is earning a scholarship to a US college program.
Australian players are increasingly being recruited by American universities, giving them the opportunity to continue their football journey while also completing a tertiary education. These programs provide access to elite-level coaching, structured high-performance environments, and advanced strength and conditioning support.
In addition, athletes benefit from competing in highly competitive college conferences, which can increase exposure to professional scouting networks and open doors to future opportunities in both national and international football pathways.
INTERNATIONAL PATHWAYS
Australian athletes are making a growing impact in professional leagues around the world, including the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan, where their versatility, physicality, and strong development backgrounds are increasingly valued.
With expanding pathways, improved talent identification systems, and growing international recognition of Australian athletes, players now have more opportunities than ever to take their game global. This shift has been supported by stronger links between Australian programs and overseas competitions, making it easier for athletes to transition into elite environments abroad.
